Professor G. ‘Hari’ Harindranath
Professor of Information Systems in the Business School at Royal Holloway, University of London.
G. ‘Hari’ Harindranath’s research centres on the societal implications of digital technologies, responsible digital and digital for development (ICT4D). In recent years, his work has focused on the digital practices of vulnerable groups such as labour migrants and the responsible use of digital tech in the context of labour migration governance. He recently led the work package on ‘Technology, Inequality and Migration’ for the five-year (2019-2024, £20 million), UK government funded, UKRI GCRF South-South Migration, Inequality and Development Hub. This work focused on how ICTs have alleviated or exacerbated inequalities in the context of South-South migration as well as successes and challenges facing the use of digital tech for migrant-related development outcomes and has resulted in the collaborative design of various digital interventions in Nepal and South Africa.
Hari is passionate about research impact and collaborates with communities and policy makers to address digital inequalities. This includes policy engagement with the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD Roundtables in Geneva and the Summit in Riohacha, Colombia, 2025), the ILO (through its FAIR Recruitment Global Conference in Geneva in 2025) and ongoing engagement with the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) where he has led a programme on ‘digital transformation for inclusive labour migration governance’, aimed at the full spectrum of stakeholders in labour migration including, policy makers, public employment services, private recruitment agencies, employers, activists and trade unions.
Hari is also working with partners in Brazil to extend his work beyond migrants, to include others living at the peripheries. This has involved the collaborative (re)design of multimedia resources on digital safety as well as artistic outputs with a range of vulnerable groups in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
