Why?
The UNESCO Chair in ICT4D‘s work package (WP9) within the MIDEQ Hub is explicitly intended to be an intervention package, using our research to facilitate migrants and tech developers to craft something together that will reduce the inequalities in the lives of migrants (for more information, see the end of this page).
In South Africa our discussions led by Dr. Maria Rosa Lorini with migrants, academics, civil society organisations, international agencies and companies since 2019 came up with the idea of training migrants to create their own short videos that would provide useful information for other migrants to help them improve their lives. While we initially thought that this would focus especially on the wise, secure and safe use of digital tech, it was clear that the migrants also wanted to share other tips and advice, from beauty treatments to tips on setting up your own small business. We don’t guarantee that these tips will necessarily achieve all that is claimed, but we are curating these videos here so that others can access them freely and learn from them. We do, though, guaranteee that they have all been developed by migrants themselves (from Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan and Zimbabwe), and we hope that those who we have helped train will go on to train others and share more migrant videos that will contribute to the betterment of their lives.

The UNESCO Chair in ICT4D’s contribution to the MIDEQ Hub in South Africa
The UNESCO Chair in ICT4D‘s contribution to the MIDEQ Hub’s WP9 in South Africa is primarily led by Dr. Maria Rosa Lorini (Post-Doctoral Research Assistant), supported by our two Co-Investigators, Professor G. Hari Harindranath and Professor Tim Unwin (Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair in ICT4D). We work closely with the MIDEQ Country Lead, Dr. Faisal Garba (Department of Sociology, University of Cape Town), and are very grateful for his support and that of the UCT team. We are also most grateful for support in kind provided by two of our Partners, The Scalabrini Centre (Cape Town and Johannesburg) and the GSMA Mobile for Development Foundation (The Connected Society and Connected Women Programmes). Colleagues and staff from the following organisations contributed very significantly to delivering the workshops and providing advice on the production of these videos (in alphabetical order) and we are especially grateful to them all:
- Stoneintheshoe
- Rainbow media
- SIHMA
- UNISA Information Systems Department
Further details of our work for MIDEQ can be accessed here, and our working papers on migration and digital tech can be found here. Please use our Contacts Page to get in touch with the team.
